Energy/UNITE Summer Academy

The UNM Engineering Student Success Center (ESS) with the support of the U.S. Army Education Outreach Program (AEOP) is sponsoring the Energy/UNITE Summer Academy Program for high school students. The summer program will take place at the University of New Mexico main campus in Albuquerque and is free of charge to participants.  The program is designed to encourage students with an interest in STEM related topics prepare to pursue college-level studies and careers in engineering and STEM related career fields.


PROGRAM DATES: 

Track I:  June 11-July 6, 2018 (UNITE)   or   Track II:  June 11-29, 2018 (Energy Academy)


Program activities include:

  • Projects that promote hands-on learning, critical thinking and team building
  • Guest speakers who will talk about their work and opportunities in their field
  • Courses that will enhance participant knowledge in mathematics, science and computer skills
  • Stipend for successful completion of the Energy Academy and UNITE Summer programs ($100/week)

 The selection criteria for the Energy/UNITE program include:

1) Students must be enrolled in a recognized secondary school
2) Students must be classified as a freshman, sophomore or junior (during the Fall of 2018 school semester)
3) Students must be U.S. citizens or permanent resident
4) Students in the UNITE Program are encouraged to return to the program next year

 Applications must include:

1) A personal statement (400-500) words explaining why the student wants to participate in the Energy/UNITE program
2) Completed and signed APPLICATION FORM

Summer Transportation Institute (STI)

The STI Program, sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration, the NM Department of Transportation and the UNM School of Engineering is a three week residential program designed to prepare students for college living and academic study in STEM related career fields within the transportation industry.  Activities will expose participants to all modes of transportation:  air, land, and water and will include topics on city planning and transportation safety.

PROGRAM DATES:  July 16-27, 2018

Program activities include:

  • Projects that promote hands-on learning, critical thinking and team building
  • Guest speakers who will talk about their work and opportunities in the transportation related field
  • Courses that will enhance participant knowledge in mathematics, science and computer skills - relating to the transportation industry
  • Free room & board at the UNM dormitories

 The selection criteria for the STI program include:

1) Students must be enrolled in a recognized secondary school
2) Students must be classified as a freshman, sophomore or junior (during the Fall of 2018 school semester)
4) Students must reside in the dormitories for the duration of the program.

 Applications must include:

1) A personal statement (400-500) words explaining why the student wants to participate in the Energy/UNITE program
2) Completed and signed APPLICATION FORM
